世界ウミガメの日は、ウミガメを大切にする気持ちを育み、その保護を呼びかける日として、2000年にアメリカの非営利団体、American Tortoise Rescueが制定したそうです。
記念日の日付は、ウミガメ研究の世界的権威であるArchie Carr博士の誕生日である6月16日に由来しているとのこと。
