kept from recognizing Him · “we had hoped” · burning hearts · bread broken, eyes opened · “Peace be with you” → they think GHOST · “touch me and see” · eats fish · opens minds — Scripture opened TWICE (v27, v44–45) · “you are witnesses” · “stay… power from on high”
| |
After the reading — set the scene
| |
afraid, hopeless, scattered · three years of “follow me,” now no tomorrow · praying: “Lord, what do I do next?”
| |
And notice — they waited. Confused, doubting, slow of heart — Luke hides none of it — but they did not force another door. And Jesus came: sat, ate, drank, broke bread… and opened the Scriptures. Twice.
| |
Now hold that room in your mind — because a thousand years earlier, another frightened man asked the same question… and opened a very different door.
| |

| | |

| Read aloud | |
Three moves — name them as you go
| |
28:6 the silence — dreams, Urim, prophets: nothing · 28:7 the forbidden door — night, disguise, the medium he banished · 28:19 the stolen word — “tomorrow you and your sons will be with me”
| |
The detail nobody remembers — Saul HAD the Book
| |
Deut 17:18–20 the king must hand-copy the law & read it daily · 1 Sam 10:25 Samuel wrote the kingship scroll at his coronation · Deut 20:1–4 a pre-printed answer for a frightened king facing a bigger army · he enforced Deut 18 on others (28:3, 9)
| |
Saul's problem was never access. The one man in Israel commanded to copy the Scriptures by hand went to a witch — to hear a dead man quote them back to him. Listen to the ghost: “The LORD has done as he spoke by me” (28:17). Necromancy's grand result: a citation of the word he already had.
| |
Two frightened men. One question — “what do I do now?” Two completely different endings.
| |
| |

“If God won't give me the answers I need, I will do whatever I can to find the answers I want.” — that is the Endor sentence. Say it slowly.
| |
The honest deeper contrast — don't over-credit the disciples
| |
Luke shows them failing too: dismissed the women (24:11) · “foolish, slow of heart” (24:25) · disbelieved for joy (24:41)
| |
So the real contrast is not “Saul grasped, the disciples waited well.” It is: Saul grasped — and Jesus came. One man forced heaven's door; to the others, Heaven walked through a locked one.
| |
Pastoral guard — say this before moving on
| |
One caution: God's silence to Saul was a judge's silence to an unrepentant king — 28:18 says why (the Amalek rebellion, ch. 15). His silence toward His children is never that. The cross settled it. If heaven feels quiet for you, it is a summons to draw near — not a verdict.
| |
Now — confession time. Because the Endor posture survived the centuries… and I found it alive in me. Five doors I have tried.
| |

God can use it — but it is the exception, not the norm. And be careful how we frame the exception: those were unrepeatable moments in God's unfolding plan — not rewards for elite believers. Gideon was the least of the weakest clan. The lot at Acts 1 fell because replacing an apostle before Pentecost happens once in history — and after the Spirit came, the church never cast lots again.
| |
② “God opened a door”
| |
Jonah fleeing: a very convenient ship to Tarshish · paid the fare, got the seat, “God isn't angry with me” Jon 1:3
| |
Circumstances are providence to be weighed — not permission slips to be cashed. Obstacle does not mean no. Smooth path does not mean yes. Otherwise it's the black-cat-crossed-the-road instinct with Christian paint.
| |

tell the story right: wet fleece / dry ground → then the reverse, dry fleece / wet ground Judg 6:36–40
| |
Gideon's fleece was not a hunt for new information — God had already said “you will save Israel.” It was trembling weakness about a command already given — and God answered thrice, without shame. |
optional dagger: the fleece-man later builds an ephod that snares Israel Judg 8:27 — technique-hunger grows into idolatry
| |

God can give peace — but a mood is a smaller, less accountable oracle. Colossians 3:15: peace rules hearts — in the body, like an umpire between us — it never replaces wisdom. Weigh it against the Word and counsel.
| |
⑤ “God told me” — the trump card
| |
sincere disclaimer first: God CAN speak — He has, in this church, miraculously
| |

We were using God like a search engine: type the query, take the result, keep control of everything else. But God is not a search engine. God is our Father.
| |

The risen One's first move was not new revelation — but old. The greatest sign in history… and He leads a Bible study. Why? Because most of what we are asking is already answered in the Book.
| |

“sign about forgiving him?” — answered Eph 4:32 Mt 6:14 · “how honest in this deal?” — answered Prov 11 · “generous this month?” — answered Prov 3 · “does purity matter here?” — answered 1 Thess 4
| |

SECOND — He makes witnesses, not consumers Lk 24:43–48
| |
THE ✕ LIST — the consumer posture we are burying (slow, one by one):
| |
✕ Extract the answer · ✕ Stay in control — no obedience owed · ✕ Consult, then dismiss until next time · ✕ Every result serves my outcome
| |

THIRD — He gives Himself… then the Guide Lk 24:49
| |
“Stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” The guidance you need comes with a Guide — the Holy Spirit, indwelling: where to go, what to do, how. Guidance in the new covenant is finally a Person, not a printout. Jn 16:13
| |
And in case you think I'm cherry-picking stories — we actually sat down and coded the cases.
| |
