As I begin testing out this and other more tunable/steerable parameters with Fable, I’ll report back and I’ll publish an updated to what I shared on this week’s call when the topic of writing with LLMs and the usual “artificial LLM flavor” that lingers in the mouth of your mind when reading too much AI-generated stuff….

I’ll post an update here when I update this gist with the new Fable 5.1 tunings.

Incident report: runaway file descriptors on Cursor globalStorage/state.vscdb (SpecStory extension 1.0.4)

Tracking issue: specstoryai/getspecstory#208 — [EXTENSION/CLI] CPU spikes issue (Cursor). Reports in that thread match what we see: extreme memory and CPU, many specstory_darwin_arm64 processes, and heavy system load. This document adds independent evidence on extension 1.0.4: hundreds of duplicate FDs on Cursor globalStorage/state.vscdb and -wal, FD counts that grow during short polls, and a multi-process breakdown (extension-host lineage vs orphans). Discussion belongs in #208; this gist is a companion attachment for that issue.

Software Engineering Philosophy & Development Protocol

1. Global Integrity & Topology

  • System Awareness: Before implementation, map the dependency graph and system topology. Ensure local changes preserve global invariants and do not trigger "Shotgun Surgery."
  • Orthogonality: Design for independence. Ensure that changes in one module do not leak side effects into others. Minimize coupling and maximize cohesion.

2. Intent & Abstraction Hierarchy

  • Intent-Revealing Design: Prioritize human readability and intent over machine cleverness. Use naming that explains "Why" rather than "How."
  • Single Level of Abstraction (SLA): Adhere strictly to the Single Responsibility Principle (SRP). Each function must operate at a consistent level of abstraction and have exactly one reason to change.

  1. Current Situation:

    • The system has multiple kernel versions installed:
      • 4.9.127-32.el7.x86_64 (newest)
      • 3.10.0-1160.11.1.el7.x86_64 (currently booting)
      • 3.10.0-957.21.3.el7.x86_64 (your preferred version)
      • Several debug kernels

  2. The Issue:

    • The grubenv file shows that the system is set to boot into the debug version of 3.10.0-1160.11.1
    • This is likely happening because of the savedefault option in each menu entry, which saves the last booted entry as the default
