@endmindmapAccording to the Qur'an, the authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of mainstream Salafi scholars (such as Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen, Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz, and the scholars behind IslamQA), a mahram is:
A man whom a woman is permanently forbidden to marry because of blood relationship, breastfeeding (rada'ah), or marriage (musaharah). (Islam-QA)
This definition excludes men whom she is only temporarily forbidden to marry (such as her sister's husband or a married man), because they could become lawful to marry in the future.
These are permanent mahrams.
The primary evidence is:
"And let them not display their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons..."

Additional permanent marriage prohibitions are listed in:

From these texts, Salafi scholars list the following:
- Father
- Grandfather (father's father, mother's father, and all ascendants)
- Son
- Grandson (through sons or daughters)
- Full brother
- Paternal half-brother
- Maternal half-brother
- Paternal uncle (father's brother)
- Maternal uncle (mother's brother)
- Brother's son (nephew)
- Sister's son (nephew)
These are unanimously regarded as mahrams. (Islam-QA)
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"What becomes unlawful through breastfeeding is the same as what becomes unlawful through blood relationship."
Authentically reported in:
- Sahih al-Bukhari

Therefore, if valid breastfeeding establishes kinship, the same categories become mahrams, for example:
- Foster father
- Foster grandfather
- Foster brother
- Foster uncle
- Foster nephew
- Foster son
provided the conditions of valid rada'ah are fulfilled according to Islamic law. (Islam-QA)

For a woman, this means her mahrams include:
- Husband's father (father-in-law)
- Husband's grandfather

A non-mahram is any man whom she could lawfully marry, either immediately or if circumstances change in the future.
Examples include:

- Brother-in-law (husband's brother)
- Sister's husband
- Husband's uncle

These men are non-mahram because marriage with them is legally possible under Islamic law. (Islam-QA)
According to Salafi scholarship:
❌ A cousin is not a mahram.
This includes all first cousins (maternal and paternal). (Islam-QA)
❌ A brother-in-law is not a mahram.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"The in-law is death."
This authentic hadith warns particularly about laxity with a husband's male relatives who are not mahrams, such as his brother. It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim.
❌ A fiancé is not a mahram.
Engagement does not create mahram status. Only the nikah (marriage contract) does. (Islam-QA)
❌ An adopted son is not automatically a mahram.
Adoption alone does not establish mahram status. Breastfeeding (where applicable and meeting the legal conditions) is what creates foster kinship. (Islam-QA)

This classification is the standard presentation found in Salafi references such as IslamQA's "Who Is a Woman's Mahram?" and is based primarily on Qur'an 4:23, Qur'an 24:31, and the authentic hadith, "What becomes unlawful through breastfeeding is the same as what becomes unlawful through blood relationship." For a woman, marriage (muṣāharah) creates permanent male mahrams only in a limited set of relationships, such as:
- ✅ Husband
- ✅ Father-in-law (and his male ascendants)
- ✅ Husband's son (stepson, after a valid consummated marriage)
- ✅ Husband's grandsons
- ✅ Son-in-law (daughter's husband)
It does not automatically extend to more distant relatives by marriage, such as:
- ❌ Brother-in-law
- ❌ Husband's uncle
- ❌ Husband's nephew
- ❌ Husband's cousin
- ❌ Aunt's husband
- ❌ Niece's husband (brother's or sister's daughter's husband)
- ❌ Cousin's husband
Those men remain non-mahrams, unless a separate cause of mahram status (such as valid rada'ah) exists.
