Backyard Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026

Backyard is a private community app for verified neighbors. This policy explains what information Backyard collects, how it is used, and the choices available to members.

Information We Collect

Backyard collects the information needed to operate verified neighborhood communities:

  • Account details: name, email address, password hash, account status, and profile settings.
  • Residency details: community, street address, and unit or house label provided for neighbor verification.
  • Optional photos: verification selfie, profile photo, post photos, listing photos, and other images members choose to upload.
  • User content: posts, comments, urgent alerts, marketplace listings, trusted contact entries, direct messages, reports, reactions, and profile bio.
  • Device and notification data: push notification token, platform, notification preferences, quiet-hours setting, and timezone offset.
  • Diagnostics and usage data: app opens, screen views, onboarding progress, error reports, app version, environment, session identifier, and install identifier.

Backyard does not request GPS location, contacts, calendar access, health data, financial account data, or advertising identifiers.

How We Use Information

Backyard uses information to:

  • Create and secure member accounts.
  • Verify neighbors and manage community membership.
  • Show neighborhood posts, alerts, comments, listings, messages, trusted contacts, and member profiles.
  • Send account emails, password reset codes, weekly digests, and opted-in notifications.
  • Moderate reports, prevent abuse, and enforce community rules.
  • Debug crashes, understand app reliability, and improve core product flows.

Backyard does not sell personal information and does not use member content for third-party advertising.

Sharing and Visibility

Your display name, profile photo, badges, bio, posts, comments, listings, directory entries, and reactions may be visible to verified members of your community. Your street address is used for verification and may be visible to verified members of your community as part of the neighbor-verification process. Direct messages are visible only to their participants.

Backyard may use infrastructure providers for hosting, storage, email delivery, push notifications, crash diagnostics, and app operations. These providers process data only to help operate Backyard.

Analytics and Diagnostics

Backyard includes a setting named "Share anonymous usage data." When enabled, the app sends basic usage events and diagnostics so the service can be improved. Members can turn this off in Settings. Crash and reliability data may still be collected when needed to keep the service secure and functional.

Data Retention and Deletion

Members can delete their account from Settings. Account deletion anonymizes the profile, removes memberships, archives active listings, and revokes active sessions. Some records may be retained for security, audit, moderation, abuse-prevention, legal, or backup reasons.

Security

Backyard encrypts data in transit. Passwords are stored as salted hashes. Access tokens can be revoked by signing out, resetting a password, or deleting an account.

Children

Backyard is not directed to children under 13. Members must be at least 13 years old to use the service.

Backyard Terms of Service

Last updated: June 2026

By creating an account or using Backyard, you agree to these terms.

The Service

Backyard lets verified neighbors share updates, urgent alerts, marketplace listings, trusted contacts, recommendations, and direct messages within their local community.

Your Account

You must provide accurate information, including real residency details when joining or creating a community. You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your password secure. You must be at least 13 years old to use Backyard.

Community Rules

Members may not use Backyard to harass, threaten, bully, impersonate others, misrepresent residency, post hate speech, post illegal content, run scams, spam neighbors, or share another member's personal information outside the community.

Content and Moderation

You own the content you post. By posting, you grant Backyard permission to host and display that content to the intended community members or message participants. Members can report content and block abusive users. Community admins and Backyard operators may remove content, restrict access, or suspend accounts that violate these terms.

Marketplace

Marketplace listings and reservations are arranged directly between neighbors. Backyard is not a party to any sale, exchange, or pickup and does not provide escrow, warranties, or dispute resolution.

Safety

Backyard is designed for useful neighborhood communication, but it does not replace emergency services. For emergencies, call local emergency services directly.

Account Deletion

You may delete your account from Settings. Deletion revokes active sessions and removes or anonymizes account-related data according to the privacy policy.

Disclaimers

The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Backyard is not liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from use of the service.

Changes

Backyard may update these terms. Continued use after an update means you accept the updated terms.
