Master and Commander: A Minute-by-Minute Historical Watch Guide

Historical, naval, and sailing facts to mention while watching Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003).

Full spoilers throughout.

Timing and how to use this guide

Times are measured from the start of the movie, including its opening logos. They are second-level cues taken from a timed transcript, not frame-verified timestamps for your particular copy. Different releases and streaming introductions may shift them.

Worked for 8m 30s

Here’s a full-runtime watch-along, with an entry for every minute and a few extra cues. The facts are short enough to say aloud; some of the darker scenes get historical context rather than a joke.

Timing caveat: these are second-level cues checked against a timed transcript, not frame-verified against your particular copy. Unmarked timestamps correspond to dialogue or sound cues; ≈ marks an estimated insertion point during predominantly visual sequences. Start from the movie’s own playback clock, including studio logos. Full spoilers throughout.

Two useful synchronization checks:

  • 00:32:09: Calamy asks about serving under Nelson.
  • 01:35:22: Aubrey says they might stay a week.

Effective Modern CMake

Getting Started

For a brief user-level introduction to CMake, watch C++ Weekly, Episode 78, Intro to CMake by Jason Turner. LLVM’s CMake Primer provides a good high-level introduction to the CMake syntax. Go read it now.

After that, watch Mathieu Ropert’s CppCon 2017 talk Using Modern CMake Patterns to Enforce a Good Modular Design (slides). It provides a thorough explanation of what modern CMake is and why it is so much better than “old school” CMake. The modular design ideas in this talk are based on the book [Large-Scale C++ Software Design](https://www.amazon.de/Large-Scale-Soft
