@djvail89 — for what it's worth, roughly what's worked for me.

I stopped trying to predict THE word and just rank the pool by likelihood. Top-1 is the guess; top-K is the spread. Trying to nail one word a day isn't really tractable — only one data point per day, one curator, one editorial taste — but the ranking I can score against the history and tune.

For recency I use the bins I dropped earlier — 0.005 / 0.03 / 0.15 / 0.5 / 1.0 across 30/90/180/365-day buckets. They're picked by feel. The thing I want to do next is replace them with bins fitted to the actual NYT history: for each day, look at the share of chosen words by d-bucket and let the curve fall out of the data. That's what I was hand-waving at with "empirical floor."

Signals I've layered on top of recency: word commonness (any standard frequency rank works — SUBTLEX-US, Google ngrams, doesn't really matter which), letter-frequency entropy (NYT answers cluster mid-entropy; high-entropy outliers like XYLEM are rarer than the pool implies), and the repeated-letter rate (~1 in 3 answers; the pool's rate is different). Editorial picks like CIGAR → 2026-02-02 I treat as sparse one-offs rather than try to model them.

One thing that did work for me with Claude / Chat: instead of asking it to design the algorithm, I framed it as "here's a CSV with [word, days_since_last_used, frequency_rank, has_repeat, letter_entropy, was_today_answer], fit a logistic regression and give me coefficients + AUC." 10-line scikit-learn job, the coefficients become the algorithm. xgboost on the same features usually picks up another ~5 AUC points.

Happy to share the harvested NYT history (1,793 dated answers from 2021-06-19, source-authoritative from the legacy nytimes.com/svc/wordle/v2/<date>.json endpoint) as flat JSON if it'd save you the legwork. Cross-referenced against your 39 and they all match.

On the eleven reused words — agreed it's hard to model. CIGAR → #1 on 2026-02-02 is the cleanest editorial signal I can see; the rest I haven't found a hook for either. Tracy's mentioned in passing that some days are themed but hasn't said which.

Data point for the algo-builders in this thread: today's NYT answer (2026-06-19) was EMOJI, which isn't in this original 2,315 list. A reminder that NYT keeps adding words outside the legacy set, so a predictor trained only on this list will miss them. (Surfaced it with a solver run against the historical list: it was the only candidate fitting the day's greens and yellows, with E green at position 1, I present, and S/L/A/T/D/N/R/Q/U/P all out.)
