Sitemap Parser

A Python script to parse website sitemaps and extract English internationalized content.

Project Overview

This is a Python sitemap parser that extracts English URLs from website sitemaps. The tool reads sitemap URLs from urls.csv, identifies English-specific sitemaps using language pattern matching, and exports the results to CSV files.

Key Architecture Components

Core Functions

  • fetch_sitemap() - Downloads sitemap content with error handling
  • parse_sitemap_index() - Parses XML sitemap indexes to extract sitemap URLs
  • is_english_sitemap() - Language detection using regex patterns for 20+ languages
  • extract_english_sitemaps() - Main orchestration function
  • parse_sitemap_urls() - Extracts page URLs from individual sitemaps
  • extract_all_urls_from_sitemaps() - Batch processes multiple sitemaps

Language Detection Logic

The parser uses sophisticated regex patterns to identify non-English content by checking for:

  • Language codes in URLs (e.g., /de/, /fr/, /zh-cn/)
  • Underscore patterns (_de_, _fr_)
  • Query parameters (lang=en, locale=en)
  • Default assumption: URLs without language indicators are English

XML Namespace Handling

The parser supports both namespaced and non-namespaced XML sitemaps using fallback logic for maximum compatibility.

  • Python: 3.11+ (specified in pyproject.toml)
  • uv: Package manager (preferred over pip)
  • requests: HTTP client for fetching sitemaps
  • xml.etree.ElementTree: Built-in XML parsing
