Already commented on your medium article, repeating it here just in case:
There's a very questionable line of code
return (philosopher->position - 1) == philosopher->count;
It appears to always return "false", as philosophers have positions from 0 to count-1. Are you sure that this line can actually return true?
@disco-king thank you for pointing that out, it appears to be a typo / bug. philosopher->position - 1
should instead be philosopher->position + 1
so that the method returns true for exactly one philosopher. I have updated the Gist with this change.
