In 2023 I was asked to judge the Cardboard Edison Award for the first time. That year, Diatoms by

was the clear runaway winner for me. A prototype so good, I wanted to leave with it and show it to everyone I know.
Judging Astrolabe was an identical experience.

Astrolabe is an extraordinary game that feels lovingly crafted, technically stunning, and deeply personal. Every decision that went into designing this game feels intentional and purposeful. The tension points are expertly calibrated and the titular object of the game... woah. Let's talk about that.

The actual astrolabe might be one of the best game components I've ever used. It's brilliant. When you line up a perfect string of turns you feel like a genius, and when you don't you feel like you're learning. Sometimes turns feel less optimal, but it never feels like wasted effort. Chefs kiss!

A trend with many of the finalists this year was 2-3 hour games with only 30-45 minutes of gameplay. Astrolabe really stood out because of it's satisfying gameplay arc that didn't waste your time. It took exactly as long as I wanted it to and I loved every moment.

The theme felt researched and executed with care. If Yasaman doesn't intend to self-publish, I hope she signs with a publisher who is invested in sticking the landing on the theme and storytelling. A cultural consultant with a background in Persian folklore would really help this game shine.

I haven't stopped thinking about Astrolabe since playing it. There's a solid chance it will be my favorite game I play all year. I'm thrilled that this game is getting the attention it deserves and I hope this award will help land it on your table soon. I can't wait to see what Yasaman designs next!
