Enable & Using vGPU Passthrough

This gist is almost entirely not unlike Derek Seaman's awesome blog:

Proxmox VE 8: Windows 11 vGPU (VT-d) Passthrough with Intel Alder Lake

As such please refer to that for pictures, here i will capture the command lines I used as i sequence the commands a little differently so it makes more logic to me.

This gists assumes you are not running ZFS and are not passing any other PCIE devices (as both of these can require addtional steps - see Derek's blog for more info)

This gist assumes you are not running proxmox in UEFI Secure boot - if you are please refer entirely to dereks blog.

Play H.265/HEVC videos in Windows Media Player (Classic) without a third-party codec pack or media player. Tested using Microsoft.HEVCVideoExtension_2.0.60091.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe with WMP 12.0.20348.1311 on Windows Server 2022 21H2 and 12.0.22621.1105 on Windows 11 22H2.

Download

  1. Go to https://store.rg-adguard.net.
  2. Search for the HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer (Microsoft.HEVCVideoExtension) app by entering the following store URL.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/hevc-video-extensions-from-device-manufacturer/9n4wgh0z6vhq

    • Do not use the normal HEVC Video Extensions app URL, because that can't play HEVC videos in Windows Media Player for some inscrutable reason.
  3. Download the AppxBundle file.
    • You may have to right click › Save Link As because the URL scheme is http, not https, if your browser is set to enforce HTTPS-only mode.
  • If it tries to save as a filename that's just a GUID, you may copy the correct .AppxBundle filename and save it as that instead.

Rancher 2.0, RKE, and some Raspberry Pi 3s

Kubernetes and Arm

Getting rke and Rancher setup to run kubernetes on arm is interesting. There is no official support yet via rancher, although there is interest and some work done towards those efforts. This is my attempt at getting a cluster of 3 Pis (2 3Bs and 1 3B+) provisioned and registered to a rancher 2 server.

Prep

I've successfully completed this both with Hypriot OS 1.9.0 and the arm64 builds https://github.com/DieterReuter/image-builder-rpi64 Both times I used the same basic cloud-init setup

How to setup a Factorio Headless Server

[LINUX] Factorio Headless Server Guide

So, with credit to the Factorio wiki and cbednarski's helpful gist, I managed to eventually setup a Factorio headless server. Although, I thought the process could be nailed down/simplified to be a bit more 'tutorialised' and also to document how I got it all working for my future records.

The specific distro/version I'm using for this guide being Ubuntu Server 16.04.1 LTS. Although, that shouldn't matter, as long as your distro supports systemd (just for this guide, not a Factorio headless requirement, although most distros use it as standard now). The version of Factorio I shall be using is 0.14.20, although should work for any version of Factorio 0.14.12 and higher.

Just a note to newcomers: If there are any issues with the installation steps, people in the comments are doing a good job
