Beat Instructions:
Open with Chox and Rev racing down the mountain road, emphasizing speed and the urgency of their escape. The road is winding and treacherous, requiring Chox's skill to navigate. Describe the darkness, the roar of Rev's engine. Describe the wind blowing so hard through Chox's greasy hair that it feels like standing under a waterfall. Show that Chox's left hand still throbs from the ward he had up earlier. Show that he's used to this pain. Do not mention Chox's left hand or pain again for the rest of this scene beat.
Introduce the FBI roadblock gradually. At first, it's just red and blue lights in the distance. Chox knows that it's law enforcement of some kind, but not whom. Then, as they get closer, more details become visible: FBI logos, multiple vehicles, and figures moving around. Chox's reaction should be a mix of surprise, frustration, and quick, tactical thinking. He needs to assess the situation rapidly, noting the type of vehicles, the likely number of agents, and any potential escape routes. He is not sure why the FBI agents are here, but suspects they were paid off by the corporation behind the contractors. They clearly expected to stop someone coming from the corporate research campus but don't seem to know who their target is beyond that. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation. Chox thinks that he is caught in a trap set by the corporation he just stole from, and the FBI and contractors are working together. Show Chox's strategic mind working as he processes the situation, realizing he's being squeezed between two forces (the FBI and the contractors), overshadowed by the even more terrifying unspecified threat from the client if he can't escape with the drive intact. Chox stops well before the roadblock, trying to keep his distance from both the FBI task force and the far greater threat of the pursuing contractors that he knows are going to appear soon.
[Focus on building tension through environmental details and the growing sense of being trapped. Use Chox's internal thoughts sparingly, letting his actions and Rev's responses carry the narrative weight. Think about a steep road on a mountain with a lot of switchbacks; think about how far ahead someone going downhill would be able to see flashing police lights.]
Characters Present:
Chox, Revenant, FBI Task Force (distant), Private Military Contractors (pursuing)
Beat Transition Information:
Begin the scene with a sense of momentum and urgency, picking up directly from the previous scene's escape. The ending of this beat should transition smoothly by having Chox see the approach of the contractors, amplifying the threat.
Narrative Motion and Action:
The primary action is the high-speed chase and the sudden appearance of an obstacle. Chox's attempt to assess the situation sets up the immediate future actions and increases the stakes. The forward momentum comes from the chase, abruptly interrupted and complicated.
Emotions and Tone:
The tone should be tense and suspenseful, reflecting the high stakes and impending danger. Chox's emotions should range from determination to a growing sense of being trapped. The writing should convey a feeling of claustrophobia despite the open road, due to the closing in of threats from both front and rear.
