Naturally, we should find ourselves at the concept of seclusion, which is so implicitly associated with privacy. When asked about how to achieve privacy, most people will respond by saying that they would go to a private place and be alone. Posner also comes to a similar conclusion when saying, a person would have to be a hermit to be able to function in our society without voluntarily disclosing a vast amount of personal information to a vast array of public and private demanders.” (Posner 249) The key to this idea is the concept of achieving solitude. First, we should realize that only a certain level of solitude could be achieved on this earth. After all, there is only so much space on the earth, and a great number of people. Maybe the idea of privacy through solitude will one day be achieved when anonymous intergalactic travel becomes possible.
It is at this point that we arrive at my first concession to the idea of true privacy existing. If privacy can be achieved through seclusion then it can one day be achieved in the vast universe. First, the importance of anonymous travel must be addressed. Why is anonymous travel necessary to achieve true privacy? This is because if another person knows where you are headed, then they can also travel to the same place and ruin your seclusion and therefore privacy. Now we must tie the concept of anonymous travel to the concept of space. If space is limited, then anonymous travel cannot be achieved. Anonymous travel cannot be achieved within a limited amount of space, because, simply put, there are only so many places you can go. With a limited amount of space, it is impossible for your travel destination to be truly anonymous because it is feasible for someone to check everywhere for you and therefore the potential for them to find you and ruin your seclusion and privacy. Though anonymous travel cannot be achieved in a limited space, the universe is understood to be of infinite size, and therefore may allow for anonymous travel.
Furthermore, to gain true privacy and seclusion, we would need an infinite amount of space. The universe is understood to be of infinite size and if there truly were a limited number of people at any given moment (regardless of the population growth rate), then each person would have infinite space to himself or herself. This concept follows a simple law of infinite that is illustrated in the equation below.
Space per person= (∞ amount of space)/(7.125 Billion people)= ∞ space per person
Having shown that true privacy may be possible within the restraints of the infinite universe, we must reduce the scope of our question to some limited amount of space. If the amount of space in question were limited, then privacy by seclusion would no longer be possible, because no amount of space, less than an infinite amount of space, would be enough to satisfy the definition of true seclusion.
Having read through this argument, there may still be some argument as to whether or not anonymous travel can be achieved if the starting position is not already secluded. If the starting position of the traveler has the potential to be intruded upon, and the intruder may then learn about the destination of the traveler, then the intruder could again travel to the same location and ruin the initial traveler’s privacy. Though we get further and further from our everyday existence, we should recognize all potential possibilities to further qualify how true privacy may be achieved. It may be feasible that an individual, in an infinite universe, began their existence in a secluded place. If said individual were able to maintain their truly secluded state through anonymous travel and infinite space then they would be able to maintain their privacy. This secluded existence would be feasible because with infinite space and a limited number of people, it would be possible for all individuals to exist in complete seclusion. |
