Switch to port range from random port for udp

Home Assistant UDP port range

This is a "patch" (not really for ease of use) to allow UDP communication in non-host-mode docker.

Why?

When home assistant opens a UDP port for streaming (esphome voice_assistant, media_player, etc) it just asks for a random port from the OS. Not knowing which ports will be used makes it impossible to tell your container system which ports to forward/allow.

How does it fix this?

This just adds a simple loop which tries to open a port from always the same starting port and tries to find the next open one.

Ok, tell me the range pls!

8124-8156

How to use it?

Just replace or mount this file: homeassistant/components/esphome/voice_assistant.py I don't know where to find this file on hassos, but you can probably find it with sudo find / -name voice_assistant.py

Docker compose example:

...
    volumes:
      ./voice_assistant.py:/usr/src/homeassistant/homeassistant/components/esphome/voice_assistant.py
    ports:
      - "8124-8156:8124-8156/udp
...

Which HA versions are compatible?

I don't know! BUT I tested it on 2023.12 and it works for me. If you want to patch up your file manually, these lines are important:

  • 109 - 120

Yeah, it would be awesome to have this with GUI configuration as HA PR
