A curated list of command-line utilities written in Rust

A curated list of command-line utilities written in Rust

Note: I have moved this list to a proper repository. I'll leave this gist up, but it won't be updated. To submit an idea, open a PR on the repo.

Note that I have not tried all of these personally, and cannot and do not vouch for all of the tools listed here. In most cases, the descriptions here are copied directly from their code repos. Some may have been abandoned. Investigate before installing/using.

The ones I use regularly include: bat, dust, fd, fend, hyperfine, miniserve, ripgrep, just, cargo-audit and cargo-wipe.

Utility for making Flatpak-installed apps available in the terminal through their normal command names
#!/usr/bin/env python3
"""Flatpak CLI Shortcut Generator
A simple no-argument tool that generates launchers with traditional non-flatpak
command names for your installed Flatpak applications in ~/.local/bin/flatpak.
Does full collision detection and warns you if you forgot to add its output
directory to your PATH. Also overrules the command-line specified in the
``.desktop`` file if the Flatpak maintainer didn't include support for
command-line arguments.

Pipewire on Arch Linux (Gnome)

Those are the only instructions I need to run to have a fully working Pipewire setup that is compatible with PulseAudio, Jack and ALSA:

$ yay -Rcns pulseaudio-jack
# note that pipewire-jack-dropin is an AUR package
$ yay -S pipewire-{jack,jack-dropin,alsa,pulse}
$ systemctl --user enable pipewire pipewire-pulse pipewire-media-session
$ systemctl reboot
# done

Get the synth wave glow theme working for VS Code on Mac

Get the synth wave glow working for VS Code on Mac

These notes are pretty much the same steps as the two extensions list, it's just that I had to collate them together because neither seems to list it fully in the proper order.

  1. Install Synthwave ’84/Synthwave + Fluoromachine theme on VS Code (I used the Fluoromachine one)

  2. Install Custom CSS and JS Loader

  3. Command + Shift + P to open command palette > "Preferences: Open settings (JSON)"

Forward systemd service logs to AWS Cloudwatch

Introduction

I often find myself ssh'ing into my servers and checking my systemd service logs with $ journalctl -f -u {name}.service. One day I got tired of this and wanted all of my important logs in once place (Amazon AWS Cloudwatch). To my dismay, there weren't any real good tutorials on how to do so. So, voilà.

Steps

Overall, it's a fairly simple process consisting of the following few steps.

1. Modify the service file

Open the service file with $ sudo vi /lib/systemd/system/{name}.service

Modify the [Service] section:

# This will place a provider-name.json directly in $HOME/.terraform.d/schemas
