Asus B250M-K bios mod to support i7-8700

Steps

  1. Download CoffeeTime 0.99 and the official firmware flash image from Asus.
  2. Use a SPI flash programmer to dump the BIOS binary from the motherboard: flashrom -p ft2232_spi:type=2232H,port=A,divisor=8 -r rom3.bin.
  3. Open the official firmware flash image in CoffeeTime. The dumped binary will not work!
  4. Set ME to 11.7.0.1229 CON and disable it.
  5. Update the VBIOS to 1062, using the Internal mode.
  6. Import SN and UUID from the dumped bios binary.
  7. Add all microcodes, apply all patches and fixes. It should look like below:
Setup
  1. Save the image as 2001-no-me.bin
  2. Use a SPI flash programmer to flash the modified BIOS to the motherboard: flashrom -p ft2232_spi:type=2232H,port=A,divisor=8 -w /mnt/r/2001-no-me.bin
  3. Install a pin-modded i7-8700 and boot the system.
  4. Reset BIOS and change the following settings:
Inflated VCore when left in Auto (up to 1.5 V) is an ASUS branded bug.
The problem is solved by setting 0.01 for the IA AC Load Line and IA DC Load Line.
On ver. 2xxx BIOS, setting 2.1 for IA AC Load Line and IA DC Load Line may help remove trotting.

Pin-mod

  1. All pins indicated in CoffeeTime's Pinmod map should be isolated.
  2. I soldered the two contact points in the Pinmod map.

Flash the BIOS

  1. I found that flashing with AFUWIN does not work. I think this method cannot disable the ME, which results in no boot. You can still use AFUWIN to dump the bios Binary.
  2. I designed my own FT2232H-based SPI programmer: https://oshwhub.com/rikka0w0/ft2232jtag, it works with flashrom and does not require a firmware for itself.
  3. Any FT2232H-based Jtag will also work:
JTAG Pin SPI Pin SO8 Flash Pin Number
TCLK SCLK 6
TDI MOSI 5
TDO MISO 2
TMS CS 1
GND GND 4
3.3V WP 3
3.3V HOLD 7
3.3V Vcc 8
  1. flashrom on Windows requires Zadig to replace the USB driver. I choose libusbK.
  2. There is a 9-Pin header (pitch 2.0mm, not 2.54mm) on the Asus motherboard. You don't have to desolver the flash IC. The pinout is:
Left Side Right Side
No Pin HOLD
MOSI MISO
CLK CS
GND VCC
WP Unused, no connection

Update

This procedure also works on Asus B150M-PLUS D3 with i7-8700 and DDR3 memory.
