Imagine a chip that learns like a brain — not by uploading data to train on later, but by adjusting itself in real time, using almost no power. That’s what the new “Super-Turing” AI chip does. Instead of separating learning and inference like traditional neural networks (train first, deploy later), this chip learns and makes decisions at the same time, directly in hardware.
At the heart of this system is a device called a synstor — a synaptic transistor that acts both as memory and as a learning engine. It doesn’t just store weights like a normal neural network. It changes them dynamically based on electrical pulses, mimicking how biological synapses adjust when neurons fire. This change happens through a mechanism called Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP) — if a signal comes in just before the output neuron fires, the connection strengthens; if it comes after, it weakens. All of this happens instantly and locally, using voltage pulses less than 10 nanoseconds wide and just a few volts in amplitude.
From a system perspective, you don’t need a GPU, external memory, or even a CPU running training code. The entire learning process is embedded in the physical device. That means no waiting, no power-hungry backpropagation, and no data shuttling between chips. Just spikes and weight updates, happening in real time.
Why does this matter?
- Energy efficiency: It runs on nanowatts — over a million times less power than a GPU running a similar task.
- Speed: It adapts in milliseconds. In one test, it learned to control a drone flying through wind in under 5 seconds.
- Hardware-native learning: You don’t need to train it in the cloud. The chip can sit in a sensor, robot, or wearable and continuously learn.
- Simplicity: The update rule is just a local function of timing between input and output. No gradients, no training loops.
- Scalability: It’s built using standard CMOS-compatible materials like hafnium-zirconium oxide. That means it can be mass-produced.

To simulate the synstor – a ferroelectric HfZrO-based synaptic resistor – we model it as an analog weight element with biologically-plausible plasticity. In Rust, we can represent each synaptic connection as a struct holding a continuous-valued conductance (weight) and state needed for plasticity updates. The hardware synstor is capable of finely tuning its conductance across ~1000 analog levels (down to 36 picosiemens resolution) and can switch states with very fast voltage pulses (±3 V, <10 ns). Our simulation will mirror this by using high-precision floating-point values (e.g. f64
) for weights to capture analog gradations. We will incorporate the same spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) learning rule used in the chip, enabling each synapse to self-adjust in real time based on pre- and post-spike timing. Key considerations for modeling a synstor include:
- Analog Weight State: Use a floating-point field (or fixed-point for embedded) to represent synapse conductance. This weight will be updated in small increments to emulate the fine analog tuning of the real device (which achieved ~1000 discrete levels). Optionally enforce bounds (min/max conductance) to reflect device limits.
- STDP Update Rule: Implement a method to update the weight based on spike timing differences. In hardware, the synstor applies a correlative Hebbian update continuously (

) – essentially an outer-product of pre-synaptic (x) and feedback (z) signals. In practice, this corresponds to a form of STDP where near-coincident spikes strengthen the synapse and reverse timing weakens it. With the synapses modeled, we build the spiking neural network (SNN) that uses these synstors for concurrent inference and learning. Each neuron in the network will be simulated with a time-stepped or event-driven model that produces spike outputs and updates its state continuously. We choose a basic neuron model such as a leaky integrate-and-fire (LIF), which accumulates input current and emits a spike when membrane potential crosses a threshold. provide a variety of neuron models (integrate-and-fire, Hodgkin–Huxley, etc.) and neurotransmission dynamics that we could leverage. Adopting such crates or their techniques can speed up development and ensure our simulation of neuron behavior is scientifically grounded. Real-time learning is supported since these models can integrate STDP rules as shown by community implementations.
Finally, to maintain biological plausibility and stability during simulation, we might incorporate mechanisms like refractory periods (briefly inhibiting a neuron after it spikes) and homeostatic adjustments (to prevent runaway excitation). These can be added by extending the neuron update logic (e.g. skip updates for a few steps after a spike, or slowly renormalize firing rates) to ensure the simulation remains robust over long runs.
The Super-Turing chip operates with analog voltage pulses and continuous electronics, which our simulation must abstract appropriately. Rather than simulate transistor-level circuits, we focus on capturing the timing and effect of those pulses on the synaptic weights and neuron inputs. The hardware applied ±3 V pulses of <10 ns to adjust synapses, effectively delivering instantaneous weight updates. We simulate this by triggering weight changes at the exact moments spikes occur, as described in the STDP implementation. Key considerations for analog behavior simulation include:

In practice, simulating analog circuits might involve more detail (e.g., rise/fall times of pulses, analog summation of currents). If needed for fidelity, we could incorporate a simplified analog integrator: for example, model the synaptic current contribution as a brief pulse of fixed shape (like a triangular or exponential kernel). However, given the <10 ns pulse width is extremely short relative to typical neural timescales, treating it as an instantaneous delta is reasonable. We assume the neuron's integration step is long enough that the exact pulse shape doesn’t need to be resolved – only the total effect (a weight current injection) matters. This keeps the simulation efficient while respecting the 10 ns resolution of weight updates on the chip.
For debugging and analysis, one can instrument the simulation to log each “analog” event – e.g., print when a pulse occurs and how the weight changed – to verify the timing-dependent behavior. This is crucial for scientific reproducibility, ensuring that the timing of pulses and resultant plasticity match expectations (for example, verifying that only spikes within a 20 ms window influence each other’s weights, etc., depending on chosen STDP window).
With neurons, synapses, and learning in place, we can simulate a full network resembling the 8×8 synstor crossbar prototype from the article. In this network,

In the Super-Turing chip demonstration, the output was used to adjust a wing shape in a closed loop until an error signal minimized. We can emulate this by computing an error from the output/spikes and feeding it back as a feedback signal (the vector
Example Scenario: To illustrate, suppose we want the network to learn to output a specific spike pattern in response to a repeating input pattern (simple pattern learning). We can:
- Define a target output spike train for the output neurons.
- Run the simulation, and whenever an output neuron spikes incorrectly or misses a spike compared to target, generate an error pulse (this could be our feedback

Regardless of the specific task, the simulation will produce a timeline of spiking activity and weight evolution. We will instrument the system to log key data: e.g., we can record the weight matrix
To decode outputs in a classification context, we might simply pick the neuron with the highest spike count in a given interval. In a control context, we might map the firing rates to a continuous control signal (e.g., average firing rate -> motor torque). Since our focus is on the implementation plan, we will keep the decoding simple and task-appropriate, and ensure that the simulation can interface with evaluation logic (for example, a function that given the spike history computes the achieved reward or error).
Finally, we wrap the full network simulation in a top-level harness that allows easy experimentation with parameters (number of neurons, connection patterns, input patterns, etc.). By structuring our code with modular components (Neuron, Synapse, Network, etc.), we can reconfigure the network for different experiments. For scientific reproducibility, we will also provide options to fix random seeds and output comprehensive logs (spike times, weight changes, performance metrics) to data files so that results can be independently analyzed or the simulation run can be repeated exactly.
Because we plan to simulate possibly many neurons and fine time resolutions, performance optimization and benchmarking are crucial. We will evaluate the implementation on several fronts:
- Execution Latency: How fast can the simulation run relative to real time? Since the Super-Turing chip is extremely fast (nanosecond updates), a software simulation will be much slower, but we aim to optimize so that we can simulate, say, 1 second of network activity in a reasonable computation time. We will use Rust’s efficient runtime and optionally parallelism to speed this up. Benchmark scenarios might include simulating the 8×8 network for a certain number of seconds of activity and measuring the actual runtime on a PC. We’ll utilize the Criterion benchmarking crate to gather high-confidence timing measurements of critical loops (e.g., neuron update loop, weight update routine). Criterion provides statistics to ensure any code changes indeed improve performance and not just measurement noise. For example, we can write micro-benchmarks for updating 64 synapses with STDP, or for integrating 8 LIF neurons for 1,000 steps, and then optimize those routines based on the results.

Memory Usage: We profile memory consumption to ensure the simulation scales. An

Learning Accuracy and Convergence: Although not a traditional “benchmark” in the performance sense, we will measure how accurately and how quickly the network learns the tasks we give it. This includes metrics like: time to reduce error
$E$ to a certain threshold, success rate in a navigation or classification task, etc. For example, we could replicate the drone navigation experiment in a simplified form and measure the learning time to adapt to a new environment, comparing it with some baseline (like an ANN or random behavior). Another measurable is the stability of learning – does the weight matrix converge to a steady solution (Super-Turing mode eventually reverting to Turing mode when optimal)? We can monitor$\dot{W}$ or the change in weights over time to see if/when it approaches zero (meaning learning has effectively stopped because the task is mastered).
To perform these benchmarks systematically, we will create a suite of tests/benchmarks in Rust. Using Criterion.rs, for instance, we can define a benchmark that runs the simulation for X steps and outputs the time per step or steps per second. Criterion’s statistical approach will help distinguish genuine optimizations (e.g., using SIMD or parallel threads) from noise. We could also use Rust’s built-in test::Bencher
(unstable) or the iai
crate for benchmarking, but Criterion’s rich features (like automatically charting performance over iterations) are valuable for our purpose.
Additionally, we will profile where the simulation spends most of its time. Likely hotspots include the neuron update loop and synapse weight updates. If we find, for example, that weight updates are bottlenecked, we might try to optimize them by processing multiple synapses in batch (vectorizing with SIMD or using algorithms from crates like ndarray
or BLAS for bulk updates). Since ndarray
can integrate with BLAS (OpenBLAS, etc.) and even supports multi-threading via ndarray-parallel
and Rayon, we can exploit those to optimize the matrix operations if our network grows large. For spiking networks specifically, a lot of computation is sparse (many neurons not spiking at once), so an event-driven approach might skip computations. We can compare the performance of pure time-step simulation vs. an event-driven simulation (where we only iterate over actual spikes). These trade-offs will be quantified in our benchmarks.
Summary of Benchmark Goals: We expect to achieve efficient simulation for moderate network sizes (tens to hundreds of neurons) in real or near-real time on a modern PC. Memory usage should remain linear with the number of synapses; using Rust’s ownership model, we avoid copy overheads by updating weights in place. And most importantly, the simulation should accurately reflect the learning efficacy of the Super-Turing design – e.g., if the hardware used 158 nW for an 8×8 network, we obviously can’t match the power, but we should match the computational results (fast adaptation, low error) within similar “network time”. The benchmarks will confirm we meet these targets or highlight areas to optimize further.
An exciting aspect of implementing this in Rust is the ability to target embedded systems. We can design the simulation core to be portable to a microcontroller or specialized hardware for on-chip learning experiments. To do this, we emphasize a minimal, no_std
approach and abstraction of hardware interfaces:
