Today we announced "GitLab Act 2," which is just a fancy way of saying
we’re pivoting to AI because that’s where the hype is.
We’re gutting the company to move faster, which means we’re firing a lot
of people and hoping "AI agents" can do the work of the humans we just got
rid of. We’re taking the money we saved from those salaries to hire more
developers, but in much smaller, more stressed-out groups. We’ve got a big
roadmap to show off in London on June 10th, mostly to prove we haven't
completely lost the plot.
The worst part is that we’re sacking some great people who actually built
this place. You might notice your account manager has vanished; if they have,
someone else will send you a polite email pretending everything is fine.
We aren't changing the product itself yet, mostly because we can't afford to
lose your business. We’re still pretending to care about open source and
transparency while we try to stay relevant.
I’m sure this all sounds like a mess. If you’re annoyed or worried, feel free
to email me and my expensive leadership team, and we’ll eventually get around
to sending you a canned response.
