Code Smells and Solutions

Definition (Code Smells) Code smells are common code anti-patterns which could and should be refactored.

This doc is summarized from Martin Flower's book Refactoring (the 2nd Edition).

Refactoring is all about Change

  • You may inverse previous refactorings as software grows
  • You may change names of a function/parameter/varible/... as you learn

How to use this doc

Go to a section of code smell, and the refactoring techniques to that smell are written in Pascal Case under the Solution section. Refer to the book's catalog to get detailed examples and explainations for each refactoring technique.

Adb useful commands list
Hi All!
I've recently launched a tool that wraps many of the commands here with a user interface. This desktop application is currently available for macOS. There's a roadmap outlining planned features for the near future.
Feel free to request any features you'd like to see, and I'll prioritize them accordingly.
One of the most important aspects of this application is that every command executed behind the scenes is displayed in a special log section. This allows you to see exactly what’s happening and learn from it.
Here's the link to the repository: https://github.com/Pulimet/ADBugger
App Description:
ADBugger is a desktop tool designed for debugging and QA of Android devices and emulators. It simplifies testing, debugging, and performance analysis by offering device management, automated testing, log analysis, and remote control capabilities. This ensures smooth app performance across various setups.

Lifecycle in React Native Component

Lifecycle in React Native Component

When we are developing our app, there are some features we always need to add, e.g. ListView components only refresh when the data in listItem is changed, initializing data before render function but not in the constructor function…

React Native component has already been implemented with many native optimization for us, but those features above are not. To do that, we need to override lifecycle function in React Native component.

The Component Lifecycle API

First of all, this is the official site docs about the API we could use:https://facebook.github.io/react/docs/react-component.html#the-component-lifecycle

The order of lifecycle should be: constructor() -> componentWillMount() -> render() -> componentDidMount() -> [ runtime loop ] -> componentWillUnmount()

macOS 10.12 Sonoma and Up Setup

Most things should work in newer versions of macOs with slight tweaks.

Custom recipe to get macOS 10.12 Sierra running from scratch, setup applications and developer environment. This is very similar (and currently mostly the same) as my 10.11 El Capitan setup recipe and 10.10 Yosemite setup recipe. I am currently tweaking this for 10.12 Sierra and expect to refine this gist over the next few weeks.

I use this gist to keep track of the important software and steps required to have a functioning system after a semi-annual fresh install. I generally reinstall each computer from scratch every 6 months, and I do not perform upgrades between releases.

This keeps the system performing at top speeds, clean of trojans, spyware, and ensures that I maintain good organizational practices for my content and backups. I highly recommend this.

Disable auto start for Android File Transfer
  • Close Android File Transfer
  • Open Activity Monitor and kill “Android File Transfer Agent”
  • Go to where you installed “Android File Transfer.app” (I have it under /Applications)
  • Ctrl+click –> “Show package contents”
  • Go to Contents/Resources
  • Rename “Android File Transfer Agent” to e.g. “Android File Transfer Agent_DISABLED”
  • Then go to “/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Google/Android File Transfer” and again rename the Agent app.

Bad Experiences with Storyboard.

Interestingly Apple doesn't even use Storyboards in their recently open-sourced ResearchKit as [Peter Steinberger has noticed][1] (under the subheading "Interface Builder").

As expected, Apple keeps improving Storyboards and Xcode. Some of the points that applied to iOS 7 and below don't apply to iOS 8 anymore (and are now marked as such). So while Storyboards inherently still have flaws, I revise my advice from don't use to selectively use where it makes sense.

Even now that iOS 7 is out, I would advise against to use caution when deciding whether to use Storyboards. Here are my reasons:

  • Storyboards fail at runtime, not at compile time: You have a typo in a segue name or connected it wrong in your storyboard? It will blow up at runtime. You use a custom UIViewController subclass that doesn't exist anymore in your storyboard? It will blow up at runtime. If you do such things in code, you will catch them early on, during compile time. How to set an icon for a file type on Mac?

Q: How to set an icon for some file types throughout the whole system?

For example, I have text files that ends with .scala extension and I want to associate an icon for that files through the whole system and for any newly created file of this extension.
