Career Journal: Mod 0 10-17-20.md

  1. When you've worked towards a goal in the past, what systems or tools have been helpful for you in accomplishing that goal? How could you adapt those same systems/tools to use while at Turing?

    • Steve Calla - I use a variety of systems and/or tools depending on the end objective. Whether in a team or individual environment, my first objective is to understand the goal with as much clarity as possible. Secondarly, I attempt to understand the timeline and key deliverables. Subject to that macro level information/overview, I break down the goal into smaller pieces again either in a team or individual environment then I create tasks necessary to complete each piece or section. I typically attempt to complete the goal ahead of schedule to allow for review and improvement if possible as I providing for some space to re-think or review allows for improvement or the ability to exceed the goal.
  2. As you start this new career, what is one of your strengths and how do you know?

    • Steve Calla - One of my key strengths per the Pairin Assessment is that I am objective/analytical. This allows me to remain calm, confident and optimistic in the face of challenges and deadlines. As noted, the Pairin Assessment is a good source to confirm this strength.
  3. Describe how you work best (conditions, environment, preferences, etc.):

    • Steve Calla - My best work happens with a balance of teamwork and individual time. I like to use teamwork to start an effort. It allows brainstorming and new ideas or streams of thought. I like to take the results of teamwork sessions into a period of individual reflection, absorbtion, practice, testing then circle back to the group to work together toward a final project.
  4. As you start this new career, what is your greatest area of improvement when it comes to your professional skills?

    • Steve Calla - I'd like to work on my ability to bring out the best in others. I've had a long career, and I feel I'm fairly good in this area of leadership particularly for direct reports, but I'd like to develop in this area not only for direct reports but functional and/or ad hoc team members.
  5. How will developing a deeper understanding of your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

    • Steve Calla - At the end of the day, as an individual and team member I have to be able to deliver toward an end goal. In order to do so, understanding my strengths (what I'm good at, what I'm passionate about) and how my prefered work style will not only help me find the best working environment (company to work for) but it will also help me succeed in that environment by contributing both as an individual and team member. I think it's also important to note that understanding the strength and work preferences of others within my work teams and beyond will also help me work productively as a team member, and lead teams or help others solve challenges as appropriate and necessary.

Overview

  • What is a career journal? The journal will help guide you through the process of discovering who you are as a new developer and how that translates into your career goals. It’s a way to check in with yourself through self-reflection, prompts, and questions, organize your targeted job search, and remember who you met as you build a professional network.
  • Make it your own. Add questions and areas to reflect on each week. Just don’t forget to share all of your successes and achievements along the way!
  • Ongoing progress checks. Throughout each module, you'll respond to the other prompts and update your progress in your document during professional development workshops and set aside work time.
  • Module Expectations. A completed career journal is required for successfully passing each module. The career development team will be assessing your progress throughout the module, and you will submit it for final review in week 6. You will also include highlights from your progress in your end of module portfolio presentation.
