Enable case-insensitive auto-complete whilst giving preference to actual matches

Add these two lines to your ~/.zshrc file:

zstyle ':completion:*' matcher-list '' 'm:{a-zA-Z}={A-Za-z}' 'r:|=*' 'l:|=* r:|=*'
autoload -Uz compinit && compinit

Tested on:

MacOS BigSur Version 11.5.1
MacBook Air (M1, 2020)

a bit more rigorous/specific config:

echo "zstyle ':completion:*:complete:*:*:*' matcher-list '+m:{[:lower:][:upper:]}={[:upper:][:lower:]}'" >>~/.zshrc
echo "autoload -Uz compinit && compinit" >>~/.zshrc
# source ~/.zshrc

Tested on MacBook Pro M5 [27.0.1]
