  8. A note on quality

    1. Example of how Call of Duty doors sound better than your guns
    2. Mixing drums as an example of quality: Rage Against The Machine vs. modern rock band sampled drums
    3. Self-expression shouldn't come at the cost of quality, expand your palette -> express yourself -> repeat
    4. Take-away Follow / talk people with taste to understand what makes their taste good and what their thought process is
  9. Master the primitives of sound

    1. Time (touch on rhythm as an emerging concept)
    2. Dynamics
    3. Spectrum (human hearing - bands of frequencies)
    4. Space

Learning

  1. Learning iteratively and quickly
  2. Learn -> Try -> Reflect -> Repeat
  3. Joke about grades = work done / time spent
  4. Teach others, nobody will listen to you if you don't know what you're talking about, better understanding in the end
  5. Go out of your way to meet new people and try projects with them, game jams, etc.

Punchline

Nowadays there are so many things you can do with your life it's easier to ask what you shouldn't do.

Don't blindly follow your passion.

Taking risks without tolerating failure is a recipe for giving up, and that's a very easy way to fail at something permanently. Often times success fuels passion more than passion fuels success. Your success is a function of resilience over failure.

  1. Learn quickly
  2. Don't follow your passion blindly
  3. Don't give up
