There has always been a massive overlap between those who listen to, make, or play music and the free open source community.
Some use technology by necessity to compose, record, and distribute music. Others use technology itself as the instrument from hardware synthesizers to software DAWs.
No matter if you're curious about guitar tabs or want to gush about the latest softsynth, there is a place for you on IRC.
Serving the Libera community since 2021!
#music: The landing page where many new people will end up first, not just for musicians but for all enjoyers of music!#music-makers: For people who are interested in the process of making, recording, and performing music, both pros and novices.#music-theory: If you prefer to focus not just on making music but the nitty gritty of how music can be analyzed or how studied harmonic relationships can be used to make new music, this might be the place for you.#music-playlist: Post your current playlists here! Recommendations, works in progress, streams, and music related podcasts! Your tracks will be added to the mega playlist. (playlist bot under maintainence)
- Be excellent to each other.
- No trolling, baiting, slurs, incitement, nor attacks.
- No out-of-context links* (except for music links in
#music-playlist). - Please do talk about your projects, performances, and releases! Just do not spam chat with self-promo.
If you see someone failing to be excellent to others, you don't need to intervene, but please let the ops know! (see the Moderation section below)
As a matter of course you must abide by Libera's Community Rules and avoid "Unwanted content and behavior": https://libera.chat/policies#community-rules-and-recommendations
* links are perfectly fine as part of a discussion or to start a discussion, just please say why you're posting a link :)
You don't need permission to ask a question, just ask!
If you have a question about which piece of software or gear to buy, it helps if you can tell us about how you intend to use it.
Some questions might take a little while to be answered and not everyone is in the same timezone, so check back later!
- Questions about software (open source and not) and hardware (open source and not) are welcome.
- Any kind of gear, including computers and support hardware and systems are welcome to discuss.
- If you have a piece of music you wish to solicit feedback on, please describe your process and what aspects you would like help with, and then post a link, please direct self-promotion to #music-playlist.
If there is a problem, such as spammers, or you are having issues with a user in a #music channel, please join #music-ops to let us know! The important part of using the channel is so other ops can have a log of the discussion rather than things only happening in DMs where things can get lost.
A kick is mainly to get your attention, usually this happens to people who keep posting their "now playing" music outside of #music-playlist. Once you fix your "now playing" script you may rejoin.
If you are banned then you cannot join the channel you were banned from. If you believe the ban was due to a misunderstanding or should be expired, then you may join #music-ops to make an appeal.
If you need to contest an operator action and cannot or do not feel comfortable using #music-ops, instead use the memoserv bot to leave a message for xybre, the #music namespace admin, like this: /msg MemoServe send xybre Your message here.
Ops should follow the official Libera guidelines for catalysing and descalation to the best of their ability: https://libera.chat/guides/catalyst
If you are an active member of a #music namespace channel, you may join #music-ops to obtain a group cloak. Instead of seeing /user/your_account or name@ip::ad::ress you will appear to other users as /about/music/your_account. You must already have a Libera.chat account. Message the Libera service bot like /msg NickServ help for how to register. Getting the cloak may take time since it is a manual process.
For more infomation see the official documentation: https://libera.chat/guides/cloaks
These other music/audio discussion channels are not under the same set of policies as channels under the #music namespace. They are independently operated and have no affiliation.
If you know of others, please let us know in #music!
