Ideas for Corking Meddler's Debut EP
POSSIBLE SONG TITLES AND NOTES:
the Short List:
- Beehives and Chicken Coops (medley of: Parkin' Don't Come Free, Nice Shade of Blue, others...)
- 9th St. Blues
- My Marginal Friends
- Ballad of Bob Smith
- The Kraken Cometh
and maybe:
- Diving Too Deep
- Standup, Standup
* = Dan has at least 1 or 2 musical ideas recorded for that song (though maybe not yet uploaded; see the bottom of this document)
*1. The Kraken Cometh
The Kraken cometh through our walls.
It's walking up and down the halls.
The message is for one and all
"Run away! So you can live today."
(Matt has a self-addressed email w/some ideas too)
*2. The Ballad Of Bob Smith
Dan started some lyrics here => https://gist.github.com/tapostrophemo/40bd4338f250ea69f2fe
Tim's ideas:
He's friends with John Doe, Joe Blow, Joe Bloggs, etc.
He's dating Jane Doe (or Jane Roe)
His closets are filled with Foo, Bar and Baz
Maybe end with ths?
"I'M LOGGED IN AS..."
"I'm logged in as..."
<small>"i'm logged in..."</small>
3. Chromakey
4. No Ports in This Storm
*4.(alt) Ships With No Home
Lost in the night,
No shore in sight.
I feel so alone,
A ship with no home.
*5. My Marginal Friends - http://www.eastofcleveland.com/m/MarginalFriend_scratch.mp3
Tech co, service workers, pilots, random strangers, coast guard, IWASM, homeless, wandering tourists - the only thing they
have in common is [that they come to this] location. The location is an undesirable oasis, an "island of misfits". [Don't
leave out] the rats, dead fish, zebra mussels, and attack squirrels.
Maybe it's the same nearly homeless-looking guy you always see in front of the grocery store, or the people you pass on
your way to your 5th-floor office. You're not friends, but you're not unfamiliar with each other.
---
My Marginal friends,
Good to see you again, in this place,
Where we all come to work,
And some even come here to play.
(Matt had a good line
6. All The Fish Are Green
7. 9th Street Blues (Lock and Keycard -Tim)
Classic Chicago blues style (lead guitar, bass, blues harp)
"icy wind's a blowin' but I left my layers home"
"don't have not desk to call my own"
something about not being able to use the john without a keycard
*8. Lock And Keycard - Jazz-standards-style; female singer?
*9. Mongoose ("Fifty Dollar" on Dan's song snippets)
10. When I Can't Stand Up
11. Beehives & Chicken Coops (kind of like "Abbey Road Medley" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSCjNCIFMvc)
- 5 or so songs tied into one long song
- Each hook or melody would describe a different area or experience on the boat
- *the parking log - Parkin' Don't Come Free - a gospel song
"Son, you're gonna have to move that car."
Parkin' don't come free!
Yes you heard it straight from me!
You can't get what you want, unless you pay the fee.
Parkin' don't come free!
- *the kitchen
- the front part of the studio
- the classroom
- *management team area - snippet titled "Nice Shade Of Blue"
Upstairs is where the management
Does all the things they do.
Comes down with an announcement.
We need some help from you (and you, and you, and you...)
"We're painting the walls again
In a nice shade of blue!"
- *outside on the top deck - (#85) http://www.eastofcleveland.com/m/85%20The%20top%20deck.mp3
- *the boat dock
(other lyrics ideas)
- "Bathrooms are down the hall, first door on your right"
- all the different visitors to the boat (port authority, skylift)
"Silver tree house riding towards its silver throne"
12. The Oracle ("You Must Be Doing It Wrong")
Maybe like current reference implementation - https://soundcloud.com/tapostrophemo/doing-it-wrong-9
or maybe like a German Metal/Opera band? (Dan has a snippet in this style...needs to find it)
13. You're Right, You're Right, But We'll Get To It Later
(customers who engage our company and want the result without the process)
Up-tempo, high energy song
Reference comparison: Not Time This Time (The Police) - http://bit.ly/1xaXuVH
(how about a punk-like tune? -Dan)
14. Urban Buck (or was that "Urbane Duck"? Urban Duck?)
Taking a boat tied to an office in the city and shooting ducks in view of the city skyline;
Other examples of the weirdness of working on a boat:
- Submarine for a neighbor
- Furniture thrown in the lake
(Could be similar to "Beehives and Henhouses") (in what way...a medley? -Dan)
15. Standup-Standup
Running around trying to make one standup after another
"9:15, 9:30, 9:45, 10:00 but they all run long"
Sometimes the customers show up, sometimes they don't
Can't get anything done
*16. Diving Too Deep
Customers with no idea what they need
Spending way too much time with subjects (and people) you'd just as soon avoid
(Some reference to holding deep dives on a boat, diving off to escape, etc. Lots of potential metaphors here.)
"He jumped, he jumped! Just to get away..."
(Jim G. wants a polka.)

This page (http://www.eastofcleveland.com/2014_musicalThumbnails.html) has all the little snippets of song ideas I captured on my phone (in 2014; I need to make another for 2015). Some of them may work for this project...some of them (the higher numbers, 150's and up) maybe even were intended for this project. Others won't work for this project at all.
I have one snippet (http://www.eastofcleveland.com/m/MarginalFriend_scratch.mp3) that could maybe work for any of:
- Marginal Friend(s)
- When I Can't Stand Up
- No Port(s) In This Storm
-Dan
