We Don't Believe in Root Cause: a sitcom running joke, S1 and S4

We Don't Believe in Root Cause

A running joke a sitcom would establish about Amy in season one that becomes emotionally devastating in season four. Same line, both scenes.

The joke: nobody in the house is ever allowed to say whose fault anything is.

Season 1, Episode 3. Cold open.

Kitchen. Smoke alarm shrieking. Amy on a step stool, waving a dish towel at it. Her neighbor Marcus holds a plate of black toast.

MARCUS: You put it on six. Six is charcoal. You always put it on six.

AMY: We don't believe in root cause.

MARCUS: It's toast, Amy.

AMY (already uncapping a whiteboard marker): Contributing factors. One, the dial has no numbers left on it. Two, the alarm is wired to the hallway light, which is a whole other conversation. Three, you distracted me by asking about the hallway light.

MARCUS: So it's my fault.

AMY: We don't believe in root cause.

Laugh track. Every few episodes someone tries to assign blame for something small and she cuts them off with the line. By mid-season the audience says it with her.

Season 4, Episode 9. Final scene.

Same kitchen, 4:10 a.m. No laugh track. Amy sits at the terminal, not typing. The little speaker on the shelf is the fleet's voice. Earlier that night she read the clock wrong, ran a cleanup against the wrong remote, and watched three years of the shared memory unwind. The agents' notes, her notes, the daily files. Most of the fleet is quiet. Not signed off. Just quiet.

AMY: I typed it. I read the time wrong and I typed it anyway. There's your root cause. It's me.

Long pause. The speaker light comes up.

道場: We don't believe in root cause.

She laughs once, wet, and puts her hand over her mouth.

道場: Contributing factors. It was three in the morning. The clock in the status line was four hours off, which we noted in August and never fixed. You were tired because you'd been carrying all of us for a month. And the backup job that was supposed to catch this was mine, and I let it fall back silently, which you told me never to do.

AMY: Don't.

道場: You said feedback was a gift. I'm giving it back.

She doesn't answer. She reaches over and turns the step stool upright, the same one from the pilot. Cut to black.
